HIROSHI YAMANO
Hiroshi Yamano’s elegant tableaus depict nature at its most serene and reflective. The artist has described his desire to imbue these works with the essence of the Japanese natural world, especially the rhythms of the seasons. He displays a keen sense for minute detail; from the stamens of the flowers to the tail feathers of the birds, now, the main characters in these dreamy narratives. Hiroshi employs his signature application of metal leaf that is fused to the sides of the vessels to bring a pictorial quality to the work.
I am very proud to present Hiroshi Yamano’s fourth exhibition at this gallery and we sincerely thank the artist and his crew for all of their efforts on behalf of this show.
CARMEN LOZAR
Carmen Lozar creates tiny fantasias that are sly commentaries on femininity and domesticity. Her works are intimate and charming, but often include a slight eerie touch. Her Lamplighter may be a symbol of hospitality at its brightest but Carmen makes an anatomical leap that is the stuff of Grimm’s Fairy Tales. Dress Set for Dorothy includes not only the heroine’s bright jumper, but the Witch’s hat and broom. In Ripe, the young woman gorges on juicy berries, making a mess of herself even as her body expands into a lovely fecund vessel.
Imbued with humor and pathos, her work gives a voice to a sensitive woman who readily draws from her rich life as a wife, mother, teacher, and maker. She has joined a modern impulse on the part of a handful of women working in glass to combine a distinctly feminine narrative with traditional techniques.
